It is believed that the modern Phalene and Papillon descended from the Continental Toy Spaniel first the Phalene and then the Papillon. They lived in nobles’ homes, keeping their laps warm and catching a rat or mouse occasionally. The exact origin of this breed is unknown, but most believe the originated in France, Belgium, and Sapin.
